How UPI changed money in India — and why the world is copying it

Whether it's drinking Irani chai on the roadside in Hyderabad, buying vegetables in the countryside, or putting a gift in a hundi in Tirumala — now a QR code scan is enough. This change, which was unthinkable ten years ago, is called UPI — Unified Payments Interface.

Who created UPI?

The Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association formed a non-profit organization called the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in 2008. After systems like RuPay Card and IMPS, NPCI launched UPI in 2016. Its specialty — money can be sent from one person to another in seconds, regardless of the bank account, or the app used. A small "UPI ID" or phone number is all that is needed, without the need for a bank account number or IFSC code.

Demonetization — an unexpected boost

Demonetization of high-value notes took place in November 2016. Due to the shortage of cash in hand, people turned to digital payments. At the same time, the government brought the "BHIM" app. Later, apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm brought UPI to crores of people. Another strength of this is the cheap mobile data available due to Jio.

Why so much success?

1. Free: There are no charges on UPI payments for general consumers and small merchants.

2. 24 hours: Money arrives immediately, even on holidays and at midnight.

3. QR Code: No need to buy a card machine. Just a QR code printed on a piece of paper.

4. Open system: Any company can build an app on UPI. Competition has improved services.

5. Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar: The foundation of UPI was laid by the fact that crores of poor people had bank accounts.

Worldview

International reports say that India now accounts for a large share of real-time digital payments in the world. Countries like Singapore, UAE, France, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Mauritius have introduced UPI payment facilities for Indians. Some countries are showing interest in designing their own systems on the UPI model. Another benefit is that it makes it easier for Telugu families working in the Gulf to send money home.

New facilities

Services like UPI Lite (small payments without a PIN), linking credit cards to UPI, UPI 123Pay for feature phones, and AutoPay (monthly bills automatically) are now available.

Beware of scams — important rules

• A PIN is never required to receive money. "We're sending you money, please enter your PIN" is definitely a scam.

• Do not accept "collect requests" from unknown people.

• Scanning the QR code is only for sending money — not for receiving it.

• Don't search for customer care numbers on Google and call; use the help section within the app.

• If someone tells you to download screen sharing apps, don't do it.

• In case of fraud, immediately call the 1930 Cyber Crime Helpline or file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in.

Conclusion

UPI is not just a payment app; it is a technological revolution that has made the common man a part of the economy. If used wisely and carefully, it is a bank in our pocket.
