Electric vehicles in Hyderabad: Should you buy one? A practical guide

As petrol prices rise, electric scooters and cars are increasingly seen on the roads of Hyderabad. Advertisements in showrooms say "Buy an EV, save money". But is buying an EV really profitable? Who is it suitable for? What to look for before buying? This guide is for you.

Running costs — a simple comparison

If a petrol scooter gives around 45–50 kilometres per litre, it costs around Rs 2 per kilometre, depending on the price of petrol. The same electric scooter, if charged at home, can go around 25–30 kilometres on one unit of electricity — that is, just a few paise per kilometre.

The difference is even greater in the case of cars. While a petrol car costs six rupees per kilometer, an electric car costs one to one and a half rupees with home charging. Those who travel 40–50 kilometers a day can save thousands of rupees per month. (The unit price is higher in public fast chargers.)

Purchase price — the real obstacle

EVs cost more than an equivalent petrol vehicle. That's why the calculation should be done like this: "Additional cost ÷ monthly savings = how many months it will take to pay back". For those who travel long distances, the extra cost will be paid back within two to three years. For those who only take the cart once a week, an EV may not be a big financial benefit.

Government incentives

The Telangana government has announced exemptions from road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles as part of its EV policy. Some vehicles are also getting subsidies through central government schemes. These incentives have deadlines and conditions, so be sure to check the latest details at the showroom and on the Transport Department website at the time of purchase.

Charging — Plan ahead

• Independent home: A scooter can be charged with a regular plug point. It is better to have a separate wall charger for the car.

• Apartment: Association approval, separate meter at parking may be required. This is a big issue for many. Talk before buying.

• Public charging: Charging stations are increasing in the city, but long trips on highways still require planning.

• Safety: Use only quality wiring and the charger provided by the company. Do not charge the battery overnight at home, especially near the bedroom, with a cheap charger.

Battery — the most important part

The battery is a big part of the price of an EV. Many companies offer a warranty on the battery for a few years or a certain number of kilometers. Read the warranty terms carefully. It is a good habit to park in the shade and keep the battery charged between 20–80 percent to maintain its health in the hot summers of Hyderabad.

Checklist before buying

1. What is your daily travel distance? What is the actual range, not the range stated by the company?

2. Is there a charging facility at home?

3. Is there a service center of that company in your area?

4. What is the battery and motor warranty?

5. Are there fire safety and government certifications?

6. What is the cost of insurance and resale value?

7. Test ride — Try driving on elevated roads and flyovers.

Environmental aspect

EVs do not emit smoke on the road, so they are good for city air quality. However, since electricity is mostly generated from coal, renewable sources such as solar power must be increased to fully benefit. EV charging is almost free if you have solar panels on your home.

Conclusion

For those who commute in the city daily and have charging facilities at home, EVs are now a smart choice. But don't just look at the ads, make a decision based on your needs.
