BJP in Andhra Pradesh: Alliances, break-ups and the 2024 comeback
The BJP occupies a strange position in Andhra Pradesh politics. Despite its low vote share, its presence in power at the Centre and its alliances with regional parties have influenced the political direction of the state on several occasions. Let's look at that history.
In the united state
In the united Andhra Pradesh, the BJP's influence was mostly limited to Hyderabad and some urban areas. The BJP won a few seats during the 1998 and 1999 Lok Sabha elections. It contested together with the Telugu Desam Party in 1999. The TDP was a key supporter of the Vajpayee government. The rise of M. Venkaiah Naidu, a native of Nellore district, as the BJP's national president, a Union minister and later the Vice President of the country is a matter of pride for the Telugu people.
2014 — Partnership with TDP
After the bifurcation of the state, the TDP and the BJP contested the 2014 elections together. Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena announced its support for the alliance. The alliance won and Chandrababu Naidu became the first Chief Minister of New Andhra Pradesh. The BJP won 4 assembly seats and 2 Lok Sabha seats. BJP MLAs joined the state cabinet and TDP MPs joined the central cabinet.
Special Status — Divorce (2018)
The then central government had promised in Parliament that it would give "special status" to Andhra Pradesh during the bifurcation. After the recommendations of the 14th Finance Commission, the centre said that it would give a "special package" instead of special status. This issue became an emotional issue in the state. In March 2018, the TDP walked out of the NDA. TDP central ministers resigned. A no-confidence motion was also moved in Parliament.
2019 — Zero
In the 2019 elections, BJP contested alone and did not win a single seat. YSRCP won a landslide victory with 151 assembly seats. TDP was limited to 23 seats. After that, Jana Sena announced an alliance with BJP. Some Rajya Sabha members from TDP joined BJP.
2024 — Alliance again
TDP, Janasena and BJP have come together again ahead of the 2024 elections. Daggubati Purandeswari, who is the state BJP president — NTR's daughter — played a key role in the alliance talks. In the seat-sharing arrangement, BJP contested 10 Assembly and 6 Lok Sabha seats. The results came in favor of the alliance — the alliance won 164 out of 175 seats. BJP won 8 Assembly and 3 Lok Sabha seats. Chandrababu Naidu was sworn in as the Chief Minister and Pawan Kalyan as the Deputy Chief Minister. A BJP MLA got a place in the state cabinet.
With the BJP not getting its own majority at the Centre, the support of 16 TDP MPs has become crucial for the Modi government. Analysts say this equation has increased the state's bargaining power in terms of funds and projects. Announcements have been made on central assistance for the Amaravati capital and Polavaram projects.
Strengths and challenges
BJP has its own strong cadre in AP and few senior leaders. It plays more of a "junior partner" role in alliances. The issue of special status is still a weapon for the opposition. On the other hand, power at the Centre and growing popularity among youth and urban voters are opportunities for the party.
Conclusion
The story of the BJP in Andhra Pradesh is one of alliances. Victory when united, loss when divided — this is what the results of the last ten years show. It will be interesting to see what strategy the party will adopt to grow on its own in the coming days.
