Deep depression heads for coast near Kalingapatnam; fishermen told to stay ashore

Srikakulam: A deep depression over the Bay of Bengal was expected to cross the coast between north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha, near Kalingapatnam, around midnight on Wednesday. A deep depression is stronger than a low-pressure area but weaker than a cyclonic storm.

Winds of 55-65 kmph are likely through Thursday evening, with heavy to extremely heavy rain at isolated places along the coast. The Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority has told fishermen not to go to sea, and warned of sudden flooding in low-lying areas. Palasa in Srikakulam district recorded 14 cm of rain, the highest in the state.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu directed district collectors and officials to stay alert and make sure people in areas prone to heavy rain and flash floods are warned in time. Across the border in Odisha, people have been moved to cyclone shelters in Gajapati district, and schools and anganwadi centres are shut in ten districts.
