Telangana movement timeline: 1948 to 2014 in key moments

The state of Telangana did not come about in a day. It is the result of six and a half decades of aspirations, movements, and sacrifices. We are providing a timeline of key events for students, competitive exam candidates, and those interested in history.

1948 — Operation Polo

Even after the country gained independence in 1947, the Hyderabad State remained under the rule of the Nizam. In the wake of the atrocities of the Razakars and the armed peasant struggle in Telangana, the Indian Army launched "Operation Polo" in September 1948. The Nizam surrendered on September 17. Hyderabad was incorporated into the Indian Union.

1952 — Mulki Movement

A movement was held in 1952 in Hyderabad state demanding priority in jobs for locals (Mulkis). Some students died in police firing during this agitation. The issue of "jobs for locals" has been central to Telangana politics ever since.

1953 — Andhra State

Potti Sriramulu died in December 1952 after going on a hunger strike demanding a separate state for the Telugu-speaking areas from Madras State. After that, Andhra State was formed on October 1, 1953, with Kurnool as its capital.

1956 — Formation of Andhra Pradesh, Gentlemen's Agreement

Although the States Reorganization Commission (Fazal Ali Commission) recommended that Telangana be kept as a separate state for some time, the decision was ultimately made to merge it. A "Gentlemen's Agreement" was reached between the leaders of the two regions to protect the interests of Telangana. Andhra Pradesh was formed on 1 November 1956 with Hyderabad as its capital.

1969 — Jai Telangana Movement

The students started a movement in 1969, complaining that the promises in the agreement were not being implemented. The agitation that started in Khammam district spread throughout the state. The Telangana Praja Samithi was formed under the leadership of Marri Chenna Reddy. Hundreds of youth lost their lives in police firing. The Telangana Praja Samithi won 10 seats in the 1971 Lok Sabha elections. Later, the movement cooled down when that party merged with the Congress. In 1973, a six-point plan was introduced.

1990s — Intellectual foundation

Intellectuals like Professor Kothapalli Jayashankar gave ideological strength to the movement with his writings and speeches on the inequalities in water, funds, and appointments. He is revered as the ideologue of the Telangana movement.

2001 — TRS formed

On April 27, 2001, K. Chandrasekhar Rao founded the Telangana Rashtra Samithi. The demand for a separate state found a political platform.

2009 — Initiation, December 9 announcement

On November 29, KCR started a fast unto death. The student movement intensified. The Center announced that the state formation process would begin on December 9. It was halted with another announcement on December 23. It is tragic that many young people sacrificed their lives during this period.

2010–2013 — United Movement

The Srikrishna Committee submitted its report in December 2010. The Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed under the leadership of Professor Kodandaram and brought political parties, trade unions and students on a single platform. Programmes like the Million March on 10 March 2011, the 42-day Sakala Janula Samme in September-October 2011 and the Sagara Haram in 2012 were held. Dhoomdham songs and art forms gave life to the movement. On 30 July 2013, the Congress Working Committee approved the formation of Telangana.

2014 — Dream come true

On February 18, 2014, the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Bill. On June 2, 2014, Telangana became the 29th state in the country. The law stated that Hyderabad would be the joint capital for ten years. That is why June 2 is celebrated every year as Telangana State Formation Day.

Conclusion

The Telangana movement is an example of peaceful democratic struggles. This history is not just a series of dates to remember for exams; it is a long journey of a region for self-respect and equal opportunities.
