Telangana's six guarantees explained: What was promised

The Telangana Congress has announced "six guarantees" ahead of the 2023 assembly elections. Once the party comes to power, their implementation will be a major talking point in state politics. Here is a simple explanation of what has been promised in these six schemes. 1. Mahalakshmi

Three guarantees for women:

• Free travel for women in RTC buses (specific services like Pallevelugu, Express) in the state. This started on December 9, 2023, within two days of the formation of the new government. A "zero ticket" will be given on showing an identity card like Aadhaar.

• Gas cylinder at a low price (₹500).

• Monthly financial assistance (₹2,500 as per guarantee) to eligible women.

While the government says that free bus travel has increased women's mobility and employment opportunities, there have been complaints that bus congestion has increased and auto drivers' income has decreased.

2. Farmer Assurance

Farmers and tenant farmers are guaranteed investment assistance per acre per year, and agricultural laborers are guaranteed financial assistance annually. In this scheme, which replaced the previous government's Rythu Bandhu, the terms of providing assistance only to cultivated land have been a matter of debate. Along with this, loan waivers have also been promised to farmers; the government has announced that loan waivers have been implemented in phases.

3. Home light

Free electricity for household consumers up to 200 units per month. For eligibility, white ration card, Aadhaar, and electricity connection details are required. If the total bill exceeds 200 units, the regulations of the electricity companies should be checked.

4. Indiramma's house

Financial assistance (₹5 lakh as per guarantee) to build houses for the poor who do not have a house of their own. Houses for those who do not have a house. They also promised to provide special house plots to Telangana activists. The selection of beneficiaries will be done through gram sabhas and surveys.

5. Yuva Vikasam

Financial assistance for higher education through "Vidya Bharosa Card" for students, guarantee of establishment of Telangana International Schools in every mandal. Schemes to provide loans and subsidies for self-employment to youth have also been announced in this section.

6. Cheyuta

Monthly pension hike (₹4,000 as per guarantee) for categories like senior citizens, widows, disabled, single women, beedi workers. Along with this, the free treatment limit under the Rajiv Aarogyasri scheme has been increased to ₹10 lakh — one of the decisions implemented by the government in the early days.

How to apply?

The government has organized meetings in villages and wards under the name of "Prajapalana" and accepted applications. To apply for a new position or to check the status:

• Contact your Mandal/Municipal Office or Meeseva Kendra.

• Ensure that Aadhaar, ration card, bank account, and mobile number are linked properly.

• Don't trust brokers who ask for money in the name of schemes — applying for government schemes is free.
